Pick of the Week (6/21/11)

Elzhi - ELmatic

Detroit landmark MC and former member of Slum Village, Elzhi's newest mixtape is almost too good. Even though paying homage to Nas' debut 1994 release Illmatic, this album is far from a copycat. I have to say that it is good to see he hasn't given up and left the hip hop scene after his release from Slum Village, as we can't afford to loose any more MC's of his caliber. Just the track "It Ain't Hard To Tell" makes this album a classic, with the added bonus that the album comes with 9 more songs just like.

DJ Pick

Lupe Fiasco - Food & Liquor

Four Grammy nominations and 5 years later, Chicago MC Lupe Fiasco's debut album is still a phenomenal listen. Diverse production, great lyricism and a unique sound put this album at the top of my list for breakout first albums. Hopefully with the upcoming release of Food & Liquor II Lupe will get back to his original sound.

Throwback Pick

Gang Starr - Full Clip: A Decade of Gang Starr

Released in 1999, this anthology of Guru and DJ Premier's 10 years and 5 albums is amazing. Everything you want or need from Gang Starr is on this album, plus some newly recorded and hard to find tracks. Baldhead Slick and Premo at their best.

Tuesday, May 24, 2011

One of the Best Yet... (6/14/11)

That's right folks, 2 full hours of DJ Premier tracks! Gonna have a lot of Gang Starr (of course), but i'm gonna try and showcase some of his other work, as is fitting for an artist with Premo's production credits.

D. Black - Ali'Yah

D. Black's second solo effort does not disappoint. Featuring production by Vitamin D, Jake One and D. Black himself, the outporing of soulful samples and heartfelt lyrics engenders nothing but respect for this project. Check it out for some inspiration.

DJ Pick

Black Milk - Popular Demand

Black Milk delivers more great Detroit hip hop for fans and skeptics alike. This is his second full length album, released in 2007 on Fat Beats Records and is entirely produced by Black Milk. Featured artists include fellow Detroit legends Guilty Simpson, T3 and Elzhi (of Slum Village), One Be Lo (of Binary Star) and Phat Kat, among others.

Throwback Pick

Athletic Mic League - Sweats & Kicks

Founded in Ann Arbor Michigan, AML is a great underground supergroup that should be payed more attention. Made of up members Buff1, 14K, Grand Champ, Texture, Tres Styles, Vital and DJ Haircut, these guys are some of the best MC's to come out of the new century. Sweats & Kicks is their debut full length album and was released in 2002 on Lab Technicians Productions.

Pick of the Week (6/7/11)

9th Wonder & Buckshot - The Formula

The sophomore release from 9th Wonder (of Little Brother) and Buckshot (of Boot Camp Clik) is what all collaboration albums should aspire to be. Released in 2008 on Duck Down Records, it has phenomenal production, lyricism and a featured artist here and there makes this album a needed addition to any serious hip hop heads collection. Also, check out their first album Chemistry, which was released back in 2005.

DJ Pick

Jake One - White Van Music

The debut album from Seattle native producer Jake One out on Rhymesayers Entertainment has it all. Featured talent includes fellow label-mates Freeway, Brother Ali and MF Doom as well as Black Milk, M.O.P., Elzhi, Little Brother and Blueprint. And so much more. Check it out.

Throwback Pick

Lords of the Underground - Here Come The Lords

Released in 1993, the debut album from Lords of the Underground is a freaking classic. Produced by Marley Marl, DJ Lord Jazz and K-Def, this is the stuff of 90's hip hop legend. Truly the chief rocka's of the decade.

Pick of the Week (5/31/11)

Danger Mouse & Jemini - Ghetto Pop Life

Released back in 2003, Ghetto Pop Life marks Danger Mouse's first collaboration with MC Jemini the Gifted One. The album features Cee-Lo Gree, The Alkaholiks, The Pharcyde, and Prince Po. Even though Danger Mouse has since moved on to Gnarles Barkley, producing several Black Keys albums and other indie stuff, in my opinion this is one of his best production albums to date.

DJ Pick

9th Wonder - The Dream Merchant Vol. 2

North Carolina producer and iconic member of Little Brother, 9th Wonder's 2nd compilation album does not disappoint. Released in 2007, it features a wide range of talent, from Sean Price, Skyzoo, Mos Def and Jean Grae to Camp Lo, Buckshot, Strange Fruit Project and Median, among many others. Check it out!

Throwback Pick

Charizma & Peanut Butter Wolf - Big Shots

Originally recorded in the early 90's, Big Shots wasn't released until 2003 on Peanut Butter Wolf's Stones Throw Records. Even after 10 years, the album still made a huge impact on the hip hop community. Now approaching the 20 year mark, Charizma is still among the greats that died too early. R.I.P.

DJ Honda - DJ Honda IV

The newest release to date from Japanese DJ and producer DJ Honda dropped in 2009 and hip hop heads are still reeling. Featuring Mos Def, Rakaa Iriscience (of Dilated Peoples), Kool G Rap, EPMD, Group Home, Sean Price, Lord Tariq, and Ras Kass. A true collaborative DJ album, DJ Honda is still one of the most widely respected producers and DJs out there right now.

DJ Pick

Buff1 - Pure

Ann Arbor Michigan stood up for Buff1's first solo album in 2007 for good reason. The former Atheltic Mic League member received wide-ranging praise for his work and featured some legendary Michigan talent, including Guilty Simpson, Elzhi (of Slum Village), One Be Lo (of Binary Star), and Monica Blaire. Check it out.

Throwback Pick

Peanut Butter Wolf - My Vinyl Weighs A Ton

The first solo album by Stones Throw Records owner Peanut Butter Wolf back in 1999. This album has so much to offer, and features such artists as Charizma, Planet Asia, Lootpack, Quasimoto, Rasco and DJ Babu among others. 24 tracks of beats, dope rhymes and a throwback sound that I miss every time I realize how wonderful this is.

Pick of the Week (5/16/11)

Statik Selektah - 100 Proof: The Hangover

East Coast producer and Showoff record label owner Statik Selektah's 3rd official studio album hit pretty hard last year. Just the assortment of talent he assembled for the album is astounding: Bun B (of UGK), Royce Da 5'9", Terminology, Lil' Fame (of M.O.P.), Wale, Styles P, Talib Kweli, Evidence (of Dilated Peoples), Sean Price, Kool G Rap, Saigon, Skyzoo, Big Pooh (of Little Brother), Torae, Souls of Mischief, Fashawn, Reks and Freeway. Dig it hard.

DJ Pick

Edo G - Wishful Thinking

Released back in 2002 Edo. G's 5th studio album is simply wonderful. Almost exclusively produced by DJ Supreme One (with one track produced by DJ Revolution) and featuring Jaysaun, Krumb Snatcha and Sean Unknown. Sit back and dig some real OG gangsta soul.

Monday, May 9, 2011

Throwback Pick

Masta Ace - A Long Hot Summer

Maybe not a way-back-in-the-day pick, but Masta Ace's 2004 album still has the unfiltered essence of what was best about soulful hard hitting 90's hip hop. Featuring guest MC's The Beatnuts, Jean Grae, Big Noyd, Punchline, Wordsworth and production from DJ Spinna, 9th Wonder and Khrysis. Check it out, there's so much good sh$t on this album to be enjoyed.

DJ Pick

J Dilla - Donuts

J Dilla's seminal wholly instrumental album was released only a few short days before his death in 2006. Out on Stones Throw Records, it remains a beautiful example of Dilla's genius as an influencial artist and an integrative musician. When you cope this for the first time, listen to it from start to finish in one go, as that is how it was meant to be listened to. R.I.P.

Throwback Pick

Binary Star - Masters of the Universe

Senim Sella and One Be Lo only had two albums back in the day, Masters of the Universe being the second, but Binary Star is still to this day regarded as a great collaboration with a formidable mix of throwback sound and new-school era funk. Released back in 2000, check it out!

Pick of the Week (4/12/11)

Skyzoo & 9th Wonder - Cloud 9: The 3 Day High

Yet another breakout New York MC, Skyzoo teamed up with epic producer 9th Wonder to bring ya'll this fantastic debut album. If you enjoy this, check out Skyzoo's mixtapes and other underground work. Released in 2006.

Ghostface Killah - Apollo Kids

A strong return to the original Wu-Tang sound that Ghostface was known for back in the day, Apollo Kids is definitely one of his best composite albums, featuring guest vocals by Raekwon, The Game, Black Thought, Redman and Busta Rhymes. Check out "Purified Thoughts" and "Ghetto". Released on Def Jam Records late in 2010.

Friday, January 14, 2011

Throwback Pick

Mobb Deep - The Infamous

Way back in 1995 Mobb Deep hit the East Coast hip hop scene with their second studio album, which turned out to be a huge influence and brilliant contribution to the gritty, dark New York hip hop culture. Featured guests include Nas, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Q-Tip and Big Noyd. The album also includes the seminal track Shook Ones Pt. II (to all the killers and hundred dolla billas!)

Pick of the Week (1/17/10)

J Dilla - The Shining

The second full-length release from J Dilla (since Welcome to Detroit), the album was not fully complete when he died in 2006. The album was posthumously completed by friends and collaborators including vocals by Common, Madlib, Black Thought, Pharoahe Monch and Guilty Simpson. Out on Barely Breaking Even records.

DJ Pick

The Roots - Game Theory

A fantastic entry into The Roots discography, Game Theory is their seventh studio album, their first on Def Jam Records. Much darker, and somewhat more stripped down than some of their previous offerings, but still focusing on conscientious lyrics and topics as Black Thought is won't to do. Released in 2006, it has garnered good reviews for its material as well as commercial success, something not seen so much nowadays.

Throwback Pick

Digable Planets - Blowout Comb

The second album from neo-soul/funk hip hop group Digable Planets dropped back in 1994, following their strong debut album Reachin'. Guest spots by Jeru the Damaja, Guru and Jazzy Joyce. Sadly, the group disbanded a year later in 1995, but members are still very active in the hip hop community.

Pick of the Week (1/12/10)

Strange Fruit Project - S1 Presents: Music Box

An interesting compilation album produced by Strange Fruit Project producer S1. Featuring Rapper Big Pooh and Phonte (of Little Brother), Lifesavas, Rah Digga, Supastition, Skyzoo and of course Strange Fruit Project.
