Pick of the Week (5/19/11)

DJ Honda - DJ Honda IV

The newest release to date from Japanese DJ and producer DJ Honda dropped in 2009 and hip hop heads are still reeling. Featuring Mos Def, Rakaa Iriscience (of Dilated Peoples), Kool G Rap, EPMD, Group Home, Sean Price, Lord Tariq, and Ras Kass. A true collaborative DJ album, DJ Honda is still one of the most widely respected producers and DJs out there right now.

DJ Pick

Buff1 - Pure

Ann Arbor Michigan stood up for Buff1's first solo album in 2007 for good reason. The former Atheltic Mic League member received wide-ranging praise for his work and featured some legendary Michigan talent, including Guilty Simpson, Elzhi (of Slum Village), One Be Lo (of Binary Star), and Monica Blaire. Check it out.

Throwback Pick

Peanut Butter Wolf - My Vinyl Weighs A Ton

The first solo album by Stones Throw Records owner Peanut Butter Wolf back in 1999. This album has so much to offer, and features such artists as Charizma, Planet Asia, Lootpack, Quasimoto, Rasco and DJ Babu among others. 24 tracks of beats, dope rhymes and a throwback sound that I miss every time I realize how wonderful this is.

Edo G - Wishful Thinking

Released back in 2002 Edo. G's 5th studio album is simply wonderful. Almost exclusively produced by DJ Supreme One (with one track produced by DJ Revolution) and featuring Jaysaun, Krumb Snatcha and Sean Unknown. Sit back and dig some real OG gangsta soul.

Throwback Pick

Masta Ace - A Long Hot Summer

Maybe not a way-back-in-the-day pick, but Masta Ace's 2004 album still has the unfiltered essence of what was best about soulful hard hitting 90's hip hop. Featuring guest MC's The Beatnuts, Jean Grae, Big Noyd, Punchline, Wordsworth and production from DJ Spinna, 9th Wonder and Khrysis. Check it out, there's so much good sh$t on this album to be enjoyed.

DJ Pick

J Dilla - Donuts

J Dilla's seminal wholly instrumental album was released only a few short days before his death in 2006. Out on Stones Throw Records, it remains a beautiful example of Dilla's genius as an influencial artist and an integrative musician. When you cope this for the first time, listen to it from start to finish in one go, as that is how it was meant to be listened to. R.I.P.
